About the lecture

Large motor yachts occupy an unusual space in the Naval Architecture world. Their owners demand a mix of operability, opulence, and originality and hence their designs continually push the boundaries and require fresh thinking.


The stability of these vessels is particularly interesting because of the goal of large open arrangements, novel design features and openings close to the waterline. 2024 saw the introduction of the new Red Ensign Group Yacht Code and, with it, the implementation of some new stability requirements. This presentation will focus on those changes, how designers can ensure a compliant design and how Masters can understand the stability booklet


About the presenter

Andy King C.Eng graduated from Newcastle University in 2007 with a degree in Naval Architecture. He then worked for QinetiQ for three years focusing on defence projects and model testing. Andy then joined Global Maritime for a short time in London, working on risk analysis and accident investigations. Andy then joined Lloyd’s Register and primarily focused on stability plan approval for a variety of ship types. He also represented LR and the United Kingdom delegation at the IMO. Andy joined Houlder Ltd in 2024 and now holds the position of Director (Stability and Statutory) focusing on consultancy services. Andy continues to be an active member of the Red Ensign Group Yacht Code Industry Working Group.
